Well, there’s a lot to it. First of all, you’ll need a fairly good art background to begin with, and secondly you’ll need someone already in the buisiness to teach you how it’s done. Also, (very important) most tattoo supply houses won’t sell to anyone that isn’t a licenced tattooist. Some will sell you a machine, a power source, and a few things… but you will need an autoclave or dry heat sterilizer, an ultrasonic cleaner, tattooing furniture setup, (old dentist chairs are easy to come by) an armrest that is adjustable, a layout bench, and a place to arrange it all where the enviroment can remain as sterile as possible. Also, it’s legal to tattoo in your home, but it isn’t legal to charge money for it, or tattoo anyone that doesn’t have a picture I.D. stating that they are absolutly over eighteen years of age. Also, there’s such a wide assortment of needles and sterile packaged needle bars to use in different applications, you’re going to need some guidance. Pig ears, practice skin, and fruit are okay, but they don’t have the same drag as human skin, so help is needed. Otherwise, you’re going to make mistakes that will be around all of someones life. The HIV virus dies fairly quickly after exposure to air, but Hep C can live on a dried surface for thirty-six hours. As for the best equipment to buy, you really do get what you pay for. The cheap stuff, ($50.00 machines, et cetera) are junk from the get-go. A lot of less-than-scrupulous manufacturers are making a killing selling this crap to people who really don’t know the difference. In short, get some tattoos, get to know the local artists in your area, and shoot for an apprenticeship. It’ll save your hide. Thanks!

I bought a machine from the Kaplan East Coast tattooing company and it works pretty good, I like it. What I do is I buy the disposable needles and tubes and put them in a sharps container because I dont have enough money for an auto clave, plus they are pre sterilized, so it helps out alot! Already done about 4 tattoos.
